If you’re wondering what exactly is the difference between a 1896 and a 1898 Springfield Krag .30-40 rifle, it’s the exposed metal surrounding the bolt handle as shown below.

In the following picture of the 1896 Springfield Krag .30-40 rifle (the actual gun listed by linked above), you can clearly see that surrounding the bolt handle, there is this exposed metal component on the carbine.
